STAR Introduction
I developed STAR based on my more than 25 years of clinical service, working with hundreds of patients experiencing distress, emotional dysregulation, and trauma. Over the years, I observed recurring patterns in how individuals respond to emotional triggers, stress, and interpersonal challenges, particularly among those with trauma histories. Many of my patients struggled with impulsivity, emotional reactivity, and difficulty self-soothing, often feeling trapped in cycles of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses.
Recognizing the need for a structured yet adaptable approach to emotional self-regulation, I created the STAR Model, a framework that integrates neuroscience, polyvagal theory, and evidence-based CBT/DBT therapeutic strategies. STAR is designed to help individuals develop greater awareness of their nervous system states, recognize triggers, and cultivate intentional, mindful responses rather than automatic reactions. By fostering increased self-awareness and cognitive flexibility, the model supports emotional intelligence, trauma recovery, and interpersonal effectiveness, empowering individuals to navigate their emotions and relationships with clarity and control.
The STAR Model is particularly effective for individuals experiencing Hyperarousal (anxiety, agitation, emotional overwhelm), Hypoarousal (numbness, disconnection, shutdown), or trauma-related dysregulation. It provides a functional, step-by-step process to slow down, assess, and respond thoughtfully to emotional situations and build increasing resilience in their daily lives.
STAR Behavioral Wellness Model
SÂ = Stop & Take a Pause
Recognize when your nervous system is escalating (hyperarousal) or shutting down (hypoarousal).
Take a conscious pause before responding to an emotional trigger.
If needed, engage in grounding techniques such as breathing exercises, sensory cues, or mindful movement.
This moment of pause activates prefrontal cortex engagement, preventing an automatic fight-flight-freeze-fawn response.
TÂ = Think & Check for Evidence
Assess your emotional state: Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, angry (hyperarousal) or disconnected, numb, dissociated (hypoarousal)?
Ask yourself:
What emotion am I feeling right now?
Is my reaction based on past trauma or the present moment?
What’s the actual evidence supporting my thoughts about the situation?
This step encourages cognitive processing and emotional intelligence, helping shift from an emotional reaction to a mindful response.
AÂ = Act With Intention
Instead of reacting impulsively, choose a conscious action:
Respond effectively: Align your response with your values and desired outcome.
Engage in self-regulation first: Deep breathing, movement, grounding techniques.
Use co-regulation if needed: Connect with a safe person for support.
This step encourages mindful decision-making and prevents self-sabotaging reactions.
RÂ = React Mindfully or Reevaluate Before Reacting
If a response is necessary, respond in a way that aligns with your well-being and interpersonal goals.
If you’re still dysregulated, it’s okay to delay your response and revisit the situation later.
As needed, use the ‘3Rs’ of nervous system regulation:
Regulate – Bring yourself back to a calm, connected state.
Relate – Connect with another person or your environment for co-regulation.
Reason – Once regulated, assess the situation with clarity before reacting.
Â
Application of the STAR Model
In therapy: Helps clients recognize and regulate their nervous system states before engaging in emotionally charged situations.
For couples & relationships: Encourages deliberate emotional responses to prevent harmful conflict cycles.
For professionals & leadership: Supports self-regulation in high-stress environments for improved leadership and decision-making.
For daily interactions: Encourages present-moment awareness and emotional intelligence in communication.

Why the STAR Model is a Remarkable Behavioral Wellness Tool and Model
The STAR Model integrates polyvagal theory, cognitive processing, and behavioral intervention to help individuals manage trauma responses, hyperarousal, and hypoarousal.
Self-awareness is a skill that improves with practice. Using the STAR Model consistently builds emotional intelligence and self-regulation.
This method empowers individuals to take control of their emotional responses, enhancing resilience, interpersonal effectiveness, and trauma recovery.
The goal is not to eliminate emotional responses, but to cultivate awareness and choice in how we engage with them.
For Hyperarousal (Fight/Flight Mode): The pause (S) and thinking step (T) allow a break in the impulsive reaction cycle, leading to a more intentional response.
For Hypoarousal (Freeze/Shutdown Mode): The intentional action (A) encourages movement and re-engagement with the present moment.
For Trauma Survivors: It interrupts automatic survival responses by fostering awareness, choice, and empowerment in emotional regulation.
